Just recently, the West Oak Middle School band in Mundelein Illinois received the exciting news that they were one of ten bands who received an invitation to compete in the University of Illinois’ Annual Band Competition. The Superstate band contest will be held May 6th-7th at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois’ Urbana campus Junior High Bands from all over Illinois submitted tapes with approximately 15 minutes worth of songs to hopefully be chosen as one of the contestants.
West Oak has a combined 7th and 8th grade symphonic band. The pieces, West Oak will be playing at the annual band competition are “Suncrest”, “The Bonsai Tree”, and “Earthdance”. When the West Oak Band played these three pieces at the IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Music Association) band competition, they received perfect scores from all three judges.
West Oak Middle School has 66 band members under the direction of John Harshey and Debra Saam. Students at West Oak Middle School have the opportunity to participate in band starting in the 5th grade.
Congratulations to West Oak Middle School and especially the band members for receiving this great honor!
