As Winter Approaches, Area Wildlife is Looking to Make Themselves Home in Your Attic.
I have a client that has a unique challenge. Masked bandits have been scouting out her house. They are scoping out entrances and have even been brave enough to attempt to enter the home on more than one occasion. Don’t panic – Buffalo Grove residents aren’t experiencing a new crime wave. They are, however, experienceing the invasion of the raccoons. These cute, furry, friendly-looking critters can actually do a tremendous amount of damage if they find their way into your attic. To help try and keep raccoons from entering your Buffalo Grove home, make sure you are doing the following:
- Keep food for your pets in a secure area
- Cap or place a closer on your chimney
- Use locking trash can lids and ONLY put your trash out on the day of pick-up
- Cut limbs that hang over your roof or remive trees next to your home
- Remove items from your property that would attrack raccoons. They like boxes, wood piles, trash piles and other large containers.
If you do hear scratching noises in the attic at night or notice your trash cans continuously knocked over, you may already have a raccoon liming among you. The Animal Contol department of Buffalo Grove is not equipped to remove wildlife from a home. I have done some research and it appears the following companies can help you get rid of any raccoons that may have made their way into your attic:
Illinois Animal Control – Groens WIldlife Services
1-888-449-6573
Northern Illinois Critter Control
1-815-825-2400
Just remember, if you do believe you have a raccoon problem, do not try and capture the animal by yourself. They may look cute, but raccoons are very aggressive animals and can truly hurt a person if they feel threatened. Try to relax, call the professionals and remember that even raccoons like to sit inside by the fire when it get chilly.
