It’s the start of Homecoming Season at local high schools in the many areas I touch as a realtor in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs. Stevenson and Vernon Hills High Schools are this weekend, September 23rd– 24th,while Buffalo Grove and Libertyville’s are October 14th – 15th.
I can honestly say that although I love the spirit, camaraderie and alumni support that surrounds the Homecoming Football Games. I’m also a sucker for the dances that follow the next day. Many of the local stores in the Woodland Commons on Buffalo Grove and Half Day Road in Buffalo Grove support Stevenson High School throughout the year and this year once again, Stevenson students painted murals in the store’s windows.
Perhaps it’s easier for me to sit back and enjoy the process because I only have boys at home and there’s much less pressure. No dress shopping, shoe shopping or hair and makeup appointments are required. For me, it’s a quick check to see if their suits fit( this year they didn’t) . It took literally 1 hour to buy them new suits, new shirts, and new ties to match the girl’s dresses. Penny’s in Vernon Hills is a great place to shop for boys’ dress clothes.
Of course, boys need to purchase corsages for their dates, and since I have twin sophomores, I needed two. Felicia Turmell of Long Grove has a great flower business and she’s been making gorgeous corsages and boutonnieres. Her website info is…www. fefesflowers.weebly.com/
One aspect I love about the dances is helping my boys plan the often insane and sometimes inspired ways that kids ask each other to the
dances. I don’t want to date myself, but when I was in high school, a boy would walk up to me at lunch and ask me. Now, I think that would be considered social suicide.
Commonly I’ve heard of “HC?” written in icing on cookie cakes on cupcakes and also written on pizzaswith bite-sized pepperonis. One client in Long Grove told me her son asked his date by putting a message in a bottle and leaving it in her pool for her to find. At a Stevenson girls’ soccer game in Lincolnshire last year, a hot pink soccer ball appeared in the goal during half time with the letters DD HC? JB marked on it. Apparently DD was the goalie and she was thrilled not only at the creativity but also because ‘everyone’ got to see her get asked this way!
Recently, while taking one of my Vernon Hills clients to see a house in Buffalo Grove,we were happily surprised when on the driveway were small votive candles that were arranged to say HC? The young man was waiting in his car to light them as soon as his prospective date got
home. It added a lot of good feelings as we walked into this home!
I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming Homecoming season!
